Notes From Newell Knapp: Ellen Rebecca Thompson was born in MN and raised in Wisconsin. Ellen came to the Dakota Territory in 1880 and filed on a T-shaped homestead in Section 18-135-56 with three 40s on the hill on the east line of the section and one 40 running down the valley of the Sheyenne. She spent the winter in Tower City, ND doing some sewing and in the spring of 1881 had a house build on her land down in the valley close to the house her Uncle Marcus Smith had built. She had come to the Territory with the Smiths in a covered wagon, pulled by oxen. In that house, she taught the first school in that part of the county.
Ellen married Chancy Ellery Knapp. They were listed as parents in the marriage records of their children:
