Alexander Thompson is part of a Bahamian family.

Biography

Alexander James Thompson was born in the Bahama Islands in 1806 to James and Priscilla Thompson. He was baptized, with his sister Claudia Thompson, at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Nassau, Bahamas, in 1808.

He married twice: first, to Charlotte Augusta Fernander, daughter of John and Lucretia Diana Hardy Fernander, 16 March 1827; and second, to Margaret Swain, daughter of Elisha Swain and Catherine Kemp, in 1835, at St. Matthew's Anglican Church. Charlotte and A J Thompson had known children Alexander James Thompson Jr., Joshua Horne Thompson, and Sophia Augusta Thompson. Joshua and Sophia Thompson died in their infancies.

His children with Margaret Swain Thompson: Lydia Agnes, Spero Claudia, James Austin, Charles Swain, Margaret Julia, and John Corlett Thompson.

Alexander James Thompson was Master of the Central School before he became a Wesleyan missionary in 1845 - he was the second Bahamian in the Methodist ministry, and the first Bahamian minister in Abaco.

Reverend Thompson was serving in the Turks and Caicos Islands when he died 18 November 1853 in the 48th year of his age. He was buried there in the Wesleyan Burying Ground.
