1875:Edvin Andreas THOMASEN, age 13 (1862) of Stavanger, Norway, lived in Kristiansan, Vest-Agder Co., Norway. He lived with: [15]
Mother, Berte Olene LARSDATTER, age 42 (1832) of Stavanger, Norway. Worked as a day labourer.
Sister, Laura Emilie TOMMASDATTER or LUDVIGSDATTER, age 11 (1864) of Christianssand
Edwin Thompson migrated from Norway to USA.
Edwin Thompson is a Floridian.
1880: At age 16 he and his brother Edward, born 1862 Oslo (age 18), caught a ship to the US. (NOTE: Problem: Same name equivalent and birth year as this person). The ship name may have been the "Wyoming", a British ship or the sister ship the "Wisconsin". With his brother they worked their way down the east coast stopping at several states in route to FL [9]
He was a sea captain until his ship docked in Mayport, FL and he met Jessie Viola TILLOTSON and fell in love. He decided to give up being a sea captain, and to stay and become a citizen. [17][8][5]
1900: Bought a home on Palmer St, Mayport, across from the Presb. Church. Became known as the "Hotel DeOnione", as it was the local gathering place. Their daughter, Ingrid built another home on the location, after which it became the home of Edwin's granddaughter, Carol Downing. [8][5]
1910: Lived in Mayport FL at age 48, from Norway, Arrived 1880, now naturalized. Captain of a steamboat. Owned their own home. Entire family except the youngest could read and write. He lived with: [11]
Burial Place: Tillotson Family Cemetery, Girvin Rd, Jacksonville FL [3][2][7]
Research Notes
29 Jan 2024: Kevin Thompson had made some calls to researcher in Norway and they suggested that the Edwin is the same person as Edvind Andreas THOMASEN ( as listed in: [13][14].
Reasons why this is likely the case:
All three names are the Norwegian equivalent of the English.
Birthdate is same month and year according to two US census. (His gravestone has a different year, but it appears to have been made many years after his death and could likely be mistaken.)
His oldest daughter has the same name as his mother. (Berte=Bertha)
His next oldest daughter has the same name as his sister (Laura)
Problems with the match:
Family lore has a brother Edward (1862 Oslo—?) traveling with him to USA. (This is unlikely as thier names are equivalent spellings and their birth year are the same). There is only a record of a sister in the known Norwegian sources. But there is likely more than 2 children of Thomas, especially considering that Edvind, possibly the only son, was free to leave home for the new world.
US tradtion claim his birth place as Oslo (no primary sources) whereas Norwegian sources for his birth claim Stavanger, Rogaland, Norway. Oslo, as the capiltal, is likely as his port of departure.
