Robert Thomson, Gentleman, was born about 1560 at Watton-at -Stone, Herfordshire, England. His parents were Maurice Thompson, whose ancestors "came out of the North" and Katherine Harvey.[1][2] His surname was alternately spelled "Thompson" and "Thomson." The given name, while clearly spelled "Robert" on both pedigrees given as sources, nevertheless shows up on many documents as "Ralph" or "Ralphe."[3] No explanation for this has surfaced so far.
He married Elizabeth Harsnett (also spelled "Harsflet" or "Halfehead"), daughter of John Harsflet of Watton-at-Stone.[2][1] Robert and Elizabeth had nine children. The order of the sons is known, but the birth dates are approximations:
Robert's eldest son and heir, Maurice, became a wealthy merchant adventurer. His daughter Mary married William Tucker, a merchant and one of the early plantation owners in Virginia. His younger sons included Col. George Thomson (c. 1603 – 1691), a merchant, Parliamentarian, soldier and MP for Southwark; Paul, who died young; Major Robert Thompson; and the youngest, Sir William Thomson, was MP of London, and knighted by Charles II.[1][4]
