Biography

Almost nothing is known of Roger Thompson of Kent who married Jane Unknown. No records of his own birth, marriage, death or birth of his children have been positively identified.

What little is known of him comes from the wills included in a NEHGR article focusing mainly on the Jefferies family, into which Roger's widow Jane married after Roger's death.[1]

His birth is estimated at the early 1540s since his marriage is estimated at roughly 1569 and the birth of his first known child with Jane at 1570. These estimates are very rough, made mainly on the basis of his children's marriages and their own children and many of those dates are estimates too.

His children identified in Jane's will were:

  1. Walter (c.1570-??? Per the 1637 will of Robert Goldstone, Walter had daughter Sara who had sons Thomas & Francis.[1]
  2. Roger (c.1571-??? married a Susan per his mother Jane's will)
  3. Frances (c. 1572- Aft. 1623) Married John Goldstone with whom she had issue, then Thomas Dyker when as Francis Dyker she witnessed her daughter's will. Listed as living in her son Robert's April 1637 will as "Frances my loving mother, now the wife of Thomas Duker of tonbridge, taylor"
  4. Margaret (c. 1573-Bef. 28 Apr 1623) Margaret was deceased by the April 1623 will of her mother Jane. Jane bequeathed to her 3 Baldock grandchildren (by Margaret), naming Robert Thompson their deceased grandfather and noting that all 3 were under 22.

These children are all assumed to be natural children of Roger and Jane but in fact there is no proof of that. jane's description of them as her sons or daughters in her will does not prove that they were not step-sons; son or daughter at that time included steps and in-laws.

Nothing is yet known of Roger's own death or estate although he was probably dead by about 1575 given that Jane was still young enough to have at least five more children after marrying John Jefferies and all those children were old enough to have at least one child themselves by 1621. Again, all these dates are very rough estimates
