Military Service

Private in Company E of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the Civil War. Enlisted on 1 April 1863 from Thomas, Ohio [sic] (maybe Fort Thomas, Kentucky on the Ohio border?) He was about 18 years old, single and working as a laborer when he enlisted. Mustered out 20 August 1865.

Research Notes

He is mentioned in an article in the Omaha Daily Bee on 15 February 1899 but Chronicling America was down when I attempted to retrieve it. To do!
