Biography

James was born about 1813.

Following his first wife's death, James married Mary Ann Mayberry on May 8, 1850. The Reverend R. Edwards presided.[1]

In the 1850 census, James is a farmer living in Neshannock Township, Lawrence County, PA and everyone in the family was born in Pennsylvania. The children are Martha age 10, Esther age 8 and Jemina age 6, all children of James' first wife Margaret who died in 1848. The value of owned real estate is $1,000. James and second wife Mary were married within the prior year. The children are attending school. [2]

In the 1860 census, father James is shown to be 45 years old which is a 2 year difference from the 1850 census. He is a farmer living in Eastbrook, Hickory Township, Pennsylvania and the value of his real estate is $1,600 and personal estate $800. The children are Martha age 20, "Ester" age 18 and Jemina 16, Mary 9, Gina 5 months and step brothers John (?) 7 and Charly 5. Martha's occupation is listed as Seamstress. Jemina, Mary and John are attending school.[3]

In 1870, James and Mary live in Chipewa Township in Beaver County. James is 57, a laborer and Mary is 50. The value of the personal estate is $2,100. A third person is listed but the name is not clear. The age is 25 which doesn't correspond to any children. The occupation of the third person is housekeeping so it may be an employee.[4]

The 1880 Census has the family living in Slippery Rock Township, James is 67 and Mary is 60. The children living with them are Mary age 27, John 26, Jennie 20 and Franklin 17. All the children are single. James is listed as a farm laborer and John and Franklin are laborers.[5]

He died November 20, 1891 and was buried November 22 in the now Eastbrook United Presbyterian Cemetery. According to the obituary, James was "the last of the brothers of that family consisting of Robert, William, Alex, Thomas and Archy. The sisters were Esyer, Martha, Eliza, and Jennie.[6]
