Biography

Lucy Matilda Thompson born 21 Nov 1842 in Bladenboro, North Carolina. [1]

Lucy married in 1861 to Bryant Gauss.

Lucy disguised as a man, enlisted in Company D 18th North Carolina Infantry, Confederate States of America.

Masquerading as Private Bill Thompson, Lucy participated in a number of battles, including the Seven Days Battle June 25 to July 1, 1862, near Richmond, Virginia.

Bryant Gauss died of wounds received at the Battle of Fredericksburg. [2]

Lucy bore her first child, Mary Caroline Gauss, on January 21, 1864.

Lucy married 2nd in Savannah, Georgia to Joseph P. Kenney.

Children included:

Patrick Kinney 96 yrs old, farmer, wife Matilda 72 yrs old, mother of 11, 6 still living, John P. 17 yrs, Joseph 15 yrs resided in 1900 in Blackshear, Pierce, Georgia, US. [3]

Lucy Gauss Kenney is buried in the Meeks Cemetery near Nicholls. Joseph Kenney died September 7, 1913 at the age of 107 years 5 months and I day.
