Biography

Alexander James Thompson was born in June 1828 in Nassau, Bahamas to Alexander Thompson and Charlotte Fernander.

He married Frances Augusta Finlayson, daughter of John Jamieson Finlayson, about 1849-1850 in the Bahama Islands. The couple had known children: twins John Edward and Alexander Matthews, Thomas Augustus, John Jamieson Finlayson, Alexander James, Arthur Wesley, Alexandra Agnes, Charlotte Julia, William Austin, Percy Gladstone, and Margaret Julia Thompson.

Alexander Thompson entered the colonial secretary's offices as a junior clerk in 1847. He later served as secretary to the Board of Health during the cholera epidemic in 1852, deputy Colonial Secretary in 1854, a Master of Chancery in 1859; Justice of the Peace and Coroner in 1860; a member of the Legislative Council, and appointed Provost Marshall in late 1862.

Alexander James Thompson passed away in 1889 in Nassau, Bahamas. He was buried in St Matthew's Anglican Church Cemetery, Nassau.
