According to Genealogical Records of the Williamson Family in America by James Abeel Williamson, Amanda Thompson's father was William Thompson of New York City[5], but his daughter Amanda's marriage announcement in the New York Evening Post on 17 December 1836 has his name as "Joseph Thompson Esq.", implying he was a lawyer.[6]
His daughter Amanda's 1880 census states her father was born in New Jersey.[7]
Below are some years from the New York City directory. The attorney Joseph does not appear until 1837. Unless Joseph was a grocer and an attorney at the same time, the census records for 1820 and 1830 may belong to the grocer.

Note: After 1843/44, the h. 112 Hudson address is consistent in various directories. It is likely for a Joseph Thompson who becomes First Deputy U.S. Marshal.[16] That Joseph was born in England about 1808 and was married to a woman named Josephine. He was born too late to be the father of Amanda.
