Joseph, born about 1837, was the son of Robert and Eliza Thomson. Robert was a merchant in Southwold Township, Canada West (Ontario)[1]
In 1859, Joseph married Agnes Rooth in Welland.[2]
In the 1861 Canada Census, his occupation is listed as "seaman."[3]
In 1881, he was a sea captain and he and Agnes had two children, Maud and Edmond.[4]
He and Agnes emigrated to the United States in 1885 and in 1900 lived in Chicago. Joseph's occupation is listed as "marine captain" in the 1900 U.S. Census.[5]
