Biography

John Thorburn was born 11 Nov 1867 in Leith, Midlothian. He was the son of John Thorburn Agnes Hewat He married Elizabeth Porteous Thomson, a shorthand typist at 11 Murrayfield Place, 10 Jun 1913. They were members of the United Free Church. On 30 Mar 1903, he received his Certificate of Competency as Master of a Foreign-Going Ship.He served in the Mercantile Marine with the Currie Line of Bernard Street, Leith. Most of his career was spent sailing between Leith and Hamburg in Germany. His last command in 1936 was the SS Gothland. John died 29 Feb 1936 in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh after a short illness.
