Biography

Charles Thorn, was born in the Southampton area in 1864. He was Christened on 13/08/1864 at Holy Trinity, Southampton (there are currently (2018) two "Holy Trinity" listed in Southampton. One in the East of the city, and one in the West.) As it appears that his parents had moved into the St Mary district prior to his birth, one might assume that they may have used the "Holy Trinity" in the Western suburb of Millbrook. However, the district of "St Mary" appears to have covered quite a large area, including Charles' suburban birthplace of South Stoneham, which is situated around the Itchin River. By 1871 Charles, aged 6 , a Scollar, was living with his parents and siblings in the St Mary district, close to the docks. In 1881 Charles is recorded as living with siblings at Winchester Street, St Mary, Southampton ... a Labourer

By 1890 Charles had met Alice P Ford, to whom he was married in Southampton in the same year.

In 1891 Alice P Thorn is found to be living alone with daughter Jane M. Thorn at Whites Road, Hound, South Stoneham, Southampton..... There is no mention of Charles .... Was he working away..? Maybe on board a ship ..?

In the 1901 Census, Charles Thorn, aged 36yrs, was found to be living with his wife and family at Lower William Street, in the parish of St Augustine, in the district of St Mary, Southampton, England. Charles is described as a Hydraulic Crane Driver which, considdering the location of St Mary, suggests that he may well have been a Dockworker.

Research Notes

There appear to have been at least two "Charles Thorn" living in Southampton between 1864 and 1941, both of whom had mothers with the name "Eliza", and both having been born within a year of each other.... It is astounding how often this situation arises.... The use of GRO indexes... https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp ... helped greatly to resolve this case.
