Levi was born 1840 the second son to Parents Thomas and Ruth Thorne. His fathers principal occupation was farming as was Thomas's father William, who had an adjoining farm. in Ross Township, Greene County. (Selma P.O.)
This was a Quaker family. As Quakers, Levi and other family members did not serve in the Civil War. During the War he moved to Thorntown Indiana where he served as an instructor & administrator, as Principal of the Thorntown Academy.
In Thorntown he met and married Ella Allen. she and her sister Jennie had been students at the Academy and her father James had a teaching position there. Ella's great-grandfather had followed a similar course as Levi's great grandfather in being very early Quaker pioneers very opportunistic in opening up the wilderness territory around the Redstone, Fayette/Brownsville in the far western portion of Pennsylvania, simultaneous with the end of the Revolutionary War events. The Thornes like the Allens had pushed on westward, as soon as the territories of Indiana and Ohio were established.
Ella and Levi had 4 children, Josephine, Frederick, Walter, Grace;
The first child Josephine being born in Thorntown IN, . After the 2nd child Frederic, Levi left Ohio and moved to NY City, where one occupation was selling Life Insurance. The 4 children all were enthusiastic about their schooling and education. Undoubtedly Ella maximized the quality and quantity of the lessons both in the home and in school.
Ella had been raised in Tippecanoe county IN with grandfather Joseph Shepard Allen who as a child had a marvelous aptitude for math and was, as a very young man, a skillful practical surveyor well before Indiana was a state. He taught school at the same time as serving as a surveyor. Ella's father and and her Uncles were all adept at farming and as community blacksmiths, but in the first half of the 19th Century they made very successful "leaps", by apprenticing and schooling into impressive professions. Several of Ellas uncles were eminent physicians or surgeons, several had great success practicing of law. or serving as judges.
