Research Notes

A note in the Thornetown Baptist Church minute book, penned by Richard Hetherington, Melancthon's grandson-in-law, on January 26, 1842 stated:

The Lord in the wisdom of his Providence has called away our aged brother, Melanthon Thorn who died last Monday morning. The funeral service was preached today by Rev. J. C. Skinner and his remains interred in the Baptist Burying Ground

Note:The following was taken from William Block research.

Melancthon Thorne was the youngest son of Thomas Thorne and Phebe Tillear. His nickname was “Lancton”. He was born in the village of Courtland Manor in Westchester County, New York. Melancthon was only 7 when his father died and he was raised by his mother who never remarried. He grew up on Long Island in a large family consisting of three older brothers and ten half-brothers and sisters. His father’s will divided all holdings between his widow and surviving children. The family farm was reserved for the use of his four youngest sons and his second wife. Upon his mother’s death, Melancthon was to receive the actual farm house that was part of the divided property. The will also instructed his executors to put Melancthon to a useful trade such as an apprentice to a blacksmith. Given the tradition of blacksmithing in the later Thorne family, Melancthon probably received this training.
