In Loving Memory Reginald L. "Reggie" Thornton 09/22/1926 - 07/06/2007
Mr. Reginald L. "Reggie" Thornton, age 80, of Waycross (Ware Co, GA) died Thursday (July 5, 2007) at the Veteran Hospital in Lake City, (Columbia Co) Florida.
He was born in Blackshear (Pierce Co), but lived most of his adult life in St. Mary's. He moved to Waycross shortly before retiring from Gilman Paper Mill in St. Mary's. He was a devoted worker, and he enjoyed his job. Reggie had a love for flying, and serving in his community. He was a U.S. Veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II, and was an avid member of the VFW, and held numerous offices while associated with this organization. He was a commander with the VFW Post in Camden and Ware Counties. Reggie served a term as City Councilman for the city of St. Mary's, and served as the Police Commissioner many years for the St. Mary's Police Dept. He served on several committees at the Gilman United Federal Credit Union. He was a member of Mershon Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Butler Thornton, Jr. and Madge Dykes Thornton, and his brother, William Thomas "Bill" Thornton.
Survivors include his wife: Yoshiko Sueta Thornton of Waycross, 2 sons: Standford L. (Rhonda) Thornton of St. Mary's, and Phillip A. (Carrie) Thornton of Blackshear. 5 grandchildren: Stacy (Jon) McGill, Grant Thornton, Leslie Thornton, Garrett Thornton, and Sara Thornton. 2 sisters: Sharon (J.W.) Dixon of Blackshear, and Wanda (William "Bill) Fletcher of Blackshear.
A funeral service will be held Monday (July 8, 2007) at Mershon Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 until 9 at the funeral home.
