Eli was born in Edgefield South Carolina and was likely less than 10 years of age when his family moved to Clarke County.

Death of Hon. Eli S. Thornton. State Legislature and Senate We regret to announce the death of Hon. Eli S. Thornton, of this county, which occurred at his residence in West Bend on the 14th inst. He was one of our wisest, oldest and best citizens, and the news of his death will carry sorrow to many in this county and state, where he was known to may of the leading citizens.
He was elected to represent this county in the state legislature in 1853, and in 1876 he was elected to represent this senatorial district for a term of four years. He has passed away at a ripe old age – seventy eight – leaving many relatives to morn his loss.[1]
