Biography

Herod James “Wood” Thornton was born in 1775[1] in Duplin, North Carolina. he was the son of Herod Thornton age 38 and Phereby Unknown age 36. He was the 5th son of 7 children.
On Feb 10th 1794 “HEROD THORNTON and Pherebe, his wife, of Oglethorpe Co, for love and affection we bear to our son Herod Thornton, Jr., of the same place, for 10 lbs. sterling, land on south fork of Goose Pond Creek being part of a larger tract of land granted to said HEROD, Description of land deals in chains, feet, degrees, and various kinds of trees. Mentioned in description is “corner of said THORNTON and Miles Jennings near the creek thence to creek thence up creek to Richard Thornton’s line …land on south side of creek. “ Wit: J. Moore, J..P. Signed HEROD THORNTON and Feraby (X) Thornton. No acres”.[2]
He married Sally (Smith) Thornton on March 17th, 1800 in Oglethorpe Georga .[3]They had 11 children.

They are shown in Oglethorpe Georga in 1810[4] and 1920. [5]
Sally died sometime before 1826.
He married Nancy (Wise) Thornton on April 7 1826 in Oglethorpe, Georgia. [6]
On August 20, 1833 He sold his property in Oglethorpe to his son Carlton Crawford Thornton, to Move to Mississippi. “HEROD THORNTON to Carlton Crawford Thornton for $800, 256 ac. On waters of Mack Creek. Disctiption mentions Jennings, Isaiah Goolsby, John Thornton”.[7]Carlton then sold it to followed the family.
He and his family were in Claiborne Mississippi in 1840.[8]
He died before July 13, 1840, in Mississippi at the age of 64. Documents were filed for the Estate of Deceased, July 13, 1840 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi, Probate court, Recorded Bond book, P. 406, 407 FOR Estate of HERIOD THORNTON, Dec’d - Nancy Thornton, William G. guice, James Throckmorton and Jacob Rundell posted $2,500 bond with Judge of probate.[9]
