Biography

Birth and Parents

Following Ormerod, Marlyn Lewis shows Margery Thornton as the daughter of Randle de Thornton. [1]

Ormerod does not specify which Randle de Thornton, and in the Ormerod reference for Randle de Thornton no daughter Margaret is provided. Therefore Margaret has been de--linked as a daughter of Randle de Thornton.

1194 Marriage to Sir William Brereton

Marlyn Lewis shows Margery Thornton married to Sir William Brereton, son of Ralph de Brereton. [1]

Ormerod observed that "William de Brereton, son and heir of Ralph, by deed without date receives from Randle "de Torhaunt," in frank marriage with Margery his daughter, all the rents which Thomas de Warial held from Peter father of the said Randle, in Middlewich hundred." [2]

Ormerod was basically the source for John Brereton who wrote in 1909 and added a marriage date: "About 1194 William de Brereton son of this last Ralph received a deed at the time of his marriage to Margery, daughter of Randle de Torhaunt, eight witnesses signing the contract. This William was knighted by Henry III in 1208, the beginning of honors held in the Brereton family for over five hundred years"[3]

Parents often contracted marriages for children in this time period, so it is possible that a person born in 1190 was married in 1194, although the marriage would of course not have been consummated until later.

Death

Ormerod (1819) on page 51 showed Margery, daughter of Randle de Thornton, married to Sir William Brereton, son of Ralph de Brereton, of Brereton, kt, "living temp Johan and Hen III." [4]King John lived 1199 to 1216 and Henry III from 1216 to 1272.

Marlyn Lewis shows William Brereton "died after 1215", which is literally true, but it gives the suggestion that he died "about" 1215, which would not be true if he lived into the reign of Henry III.

Robert Maitland Brereton who wrote in 1904, shows a death date of 1216:[5] Sir William de Brerton III, fourth Lord of Brereton who died in 1216 had now married Margery, daughter of Sir Randle de Thornton, of Thornton, Cheshire.

Issue

  1. daughter [1]
  2. Sir Ralph Brereton+ died about 1275 [1]

I have revised the profiles of Randle and Amicia de Thornton, who were shown as Margery's parents, so that they were born and lived later, which made a problem with Margery's dates. Further research shows that Ormerod specified Margery was a daughter of Randle de Thornton, but did not specify which one. Therefore I have left Margery's dates intact but have de-linked her from Randle and Amicia as parents -- if further documentation shows she was in fact their daughter, the links can be restored.
