Biography

Calvin R Thornton is a difficult person to tie down. I can find very little information on him and his wives other than census records. I find Calvin's wives (Louisa b. 1826, Elizabeth b. 1840 & Emily b. 1832) to be very confusing. His children, Mary & Martin, indicate on their death certificate that their mother is Eliza Thornton (the 2nd wife).^[1][2] Sarah E. indicates on her death certificate that her mother is Temple Emily Davis (the 3rd wife).^[3] Louisa (the 1st wife) shows up on the 1860 census when Sarah & Mary are under age 2 making me believe she is their actual mother. Eliza (the 2nd wife) is listed on the 1870 census with Sarah age 11, Mary age 8, and Martin age 6. The 1880 census shows Temple Emily Davis, Calvin's 3rd wife.

Calvin was born 21 Jan 1826 in Johnston County, North Carolina to David Thornton and Nancy Ingram.[Citation Needed] His daughter, Mary, indicates her father is born in Johnston County on her death certificate.^[1]

He passed away after 1880 in Westbrook, Sampson County, North Carolina and we do not know where he is buried. The 1880 census indicated that he was crippled or bedridden so it was most likely not long after 1880.
