Family recollection that Agnes was born 15 May 1844 in Ilkeston (but suggestion that this might be the wrong date by 10 years). Married William Argile on 10 Jun 1870. Six children born between 1872 and 1880.
Agnes' birth was registered in the second quarter of 1853 in Basford. Her surname was Thorp, mother's maiden name unlisted. Until she married, Agnes was recorded as Agnes Witham on census returns. Her father was widowed in 1843 and at the time of the 1851 census her mother, Ann Thorp, was was present as a visitor in the family home. She was listed as Agnes's father's wife in 1861. They did marry in 1856 (see their profiles for details and sources).
In 1861 Agness Witham was 7, living with her parents John and Ann Witham and six siblings at Hungerhill, Ilkeston.
At the time of the 1871 census Agnes was 18, a framework knitter, living at 78 North Road with her parents, seven siblings and a niece.
Agnes married William Argile on 15th June 1871, at the Parish Church in Ilkeston. William was a batchelor, single, age 25, profession cordwainer and his father, William Argile was a cordwainer. Agnes was a spinster, age 18, and her father, John Witham was a FWK – frame work knitter presumably. William signed his mane and Agnes made her mark. Witnesses were Robert Warren and Elizabeth Witham.
In 1881 Agnes was 28, living with William and five children, John W (age 9, Scholar), Charles J (age 8, Scholar), Mary (age 5), Vincent W (age 4) and Catherine (age 2), at 91 Bath St, Ilkeston.
At the time of the 1891 England Census, William and Agnes (age 38) were at 55 Station Road, Ilkeston. Nine children were living at home, John W (single age 19 Coal Mine), Charles (Single age 17 Coal Miner), Mary (age 15), Vincent W (age 13 Coal Miner), Catherine G (age 12), Maria (age 10), Agnes A (age 8), Sarah J (age 4), Martha (age 11 mo).
In 1901 Agnes was a widow, keeping a Lodging House at 18 Stamford Street, Ilkeston. She was 46. Her daughters Maria (20), Sarah (14), Martha (11) and Ada (6) were living with her, as well as three lodgers, two of whom were Music Hall Artists.
An Agnes Argyle died in Nottingham in J Quarter of 1907, age 54.

Ann Witham Daughter Female 22 Ilkeston, Derbyshire
Elizabeth Witham Daughter Female 10 Ilkeston, Derbyshire

I have not been able to find Agnes in the 1911 Census, but her daughters Sarah Argyle (24, single) and Martha (20, single) were living at 7 Bunney Terrace, Nottingham with a boarder, William Chambers (24, single). Sarah and Martha were Cotton Cleaners and William was a Warper- Lace Trade. This suggests that Agnes had died by this time.
