Biography

Alden J. Tharp was born in 1845. He was the son of William Thorp and Elizabeth Walker. In the 1850 census Alden (age 5) was in Travis County, Texas, United States.^[1] In the 1860 census Aldon (age 15) was in Precinct 1, Travis County, Texas.^[2] Alden was registered to vote in 1867 in Travis County, Texas.^[3] In the 1870 census Alden (age 25), Farmer, was in Travis County, Texas.^[4]

A. J. Tharp married Jane Baker on 22 July 1871 in Travis County, Texas.^[5] In the 1880 census A J Thorp (age 35), farmer, was the married head of household in Precinct 4, Travis, Texas, United States.^[6] His wife Jane died on 23 October 1880.

Austin joined the police force. Alden was in a directory in 1887-1888 in Austin, Texas, boarding at Forrest House. He was a constable, with his office at 920 Congress Avenue in downtown Austin.^[7] Alden was in the directory in 1895 in Austin, Texas, boarding with Sheriff R. E. White. Alden was a deputy sheriff for White and others after him.^[8] He succeeded Jim Lucy as city marshal. In the 1900 census Alden (age 64), city marshal, was the widowed head of household in Austin Ward 7, Travis County, Texas.^[9] Alden served two terms as city marshal. He In the 1910 census Alden (age 65), real estate agent, was the widowed head of household in Austin Ward 2, Travis, Texas, United States.^[10]

Alden was traveling on business for two or three months, and was returning home to Austin when he became ill while staying with a son in Fort Worth. He died on Monday morning, 18 July 1910, in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.^[11] Funeral services were at his son Burney's home downtown at 606 East Ninth Street, with ceremonies by the Knights of Pythias.^[12] He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, Texas, United States.^[13]
