Biography

Forest Hardy Thorp was born October 8, 1888 in Covington, Troy Township, Fountain, Indiana. He died June 13, 1951 in Shelbyville, Shelby, Indiana at age 63.

Son of George Grover Thorp (1863-1941) and Minnie Matilda Mitchell (1862-1916).

1900 United States Census, Troy Township, Fountain, Indiana: George G. Thorp is head of household, a farmer age 37, with wife Minnie Thorp age 37, and children Vera Thorp age 15, and Hardy Thorp, age 12.

1910 United States Census, Noble, Shelby, Indiana: George Thorp is head of household, a farmer age 46, with wife Minnie Thorp age 47, and son Hardie Thorp, a laborer age 21.

Forest Hardy Thorp married Ethel F. Alley on September 5, 1912 in Shelby, Indiana. At the time of marriage, Forest was 24 years old, and Ethel was 23.

Children:

  1. Marian Elizabeth (Thorp) Wiley (1915-2005).
  2. Gladys Mae (Thorp) Davis (1925-2017).

1920 United States Census, Noble Township, Shelby, Indiana: F. Hardy Thrope is head of household, a farmer age 31, with wife Ethel Thorpe age 30, and daughter Marian E. Thorpe age 4.

1930 United States Census, Noble, Shelby, Indiana: Hardy Throp is head of household, a farmer age 41, with wife Ethel Thorp age 40, and daughters Marion age 14, and Gladys age 4. Also in the home is mother-in-law Sophia Ally age 64.

1940 United States Census, Noble Township, Shelby, Indiana: Hardy Thorpe is head of household, a farmer age 50, with wife Ethel Thorpe age 50, and daughters Marian Thorpe, a public school teacher age 24, and Gladys Thorpe age 14. Also in the home is mother-in-law Sophie Alley age 76.

Obituary

F. Hardy Thorp, 62, prominent Noble township farmer, died at 3:45 this morning in the Major Hospital. He became ill Sunday and was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning.

Born in Fountain county on Oct. 8, 1888, he was the son of George G. and Minnie (Mitchell) Thorp. He was married on Sept. 5, 1912, in Noble Township to Ethel Alley. Surviving with the wife are two daughters, Mrs. Estice [Marian] Wiley of Washington township and Mrs. John [Gladys] Davis of Addison township; three grandchildren, Julian Neal Wiley and Stephen Lee and Carol Davis, and one sister, Mrs. Vera Young of Washington township.

Mr. Thorp had spent most of his life in Noble township and was an elder and active member of the St. Paul Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held at the church Friday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Walker, assisted by Rev. E. L. Ford, officiating. Interment will be in the VanPelt cemetery. Friends may call at the Ewing mortuary from 9:00 a.m. Thursday until noon on Friday. The body will lie in state in the church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Friday." - Submitted by Don T. Mitchell
