Biography

Margaret Threlkeld was born about 1385, based on the 1409 IPM of her father, which stated that she was 24 years and more in that year. She was the elder of two daughters of William Threlkeld and his first wife Margaret. [1]

Before 1398, Margaret married Sir John Lancaster. Her sister Elizabeth married William Lancaster, probably John's younger brother. "The double marriage was clearly planned by Sir William Lancaster as a means of extending his family’s influence as far as Cumberland." [2] However, the birth of a son, Henry Threlkeld, to Sir William Threlkeld and his second wife Katherine reduced the prospects of the sisters and led, eventually, to armed violence over the succession to the estate. [3]

The marriage of Margaret and Sir John Lancaster produced children: one son who predeceased his father and four daughters, eventual coheirs to his estate. [2] [4]

Isabel - m. Fleming

Margaret Lancaster's brother Sir Henry Threlkeld would eventually (1427/8) buy out the portions of the sisters' inheritance of Yanwath, their mother's jointure, left to them after their father's death in 1408, the payment being £20 each. [5]

Margaret probably died by 1414, definitely by 1422, when Sir John Lancaster had remarried to his second wife, Katrine. [4]
