Biography

Winifred was the daughter of Sir Lancelot Threlkeld of Threlkeld, Cumberland and Yanwath and Crosby Ravensworth, Westmorland. [1]

She apparently was unmarried at the time of her father's death (about 1510), but by 1515 she had married William Pickering, fourth son of James Pickering of Killington, Westmorland. [2] She and her sisters were engaged in a lawsuit from 1510 to 1515 with their uncle Christopher Threlkeld regarding the inheritance from their father. In the final settlement Winifred was given the manor of Threlkeld, Cumberland.[1][3][4]

She and her husband had children: Christopher, John, Thomas, Edward, Anne, Jane, Alice, Winifred, and Elisabeth.[2]

Winifred predeceased her husband, who died 20 February 1587, leaving their grandson Christopher as heir to Threlkeld.[5]

Research Notes

Her father Sir Lancelot Threlkeld was married twice. An 1888 article says that Winifred and her sisters were the daughters of the first wife Eliza Ratcliffe [Ellen Radcliffe].[6] A 1923 article by Frederick Ragg say that their mother was his second wife Margaret Neville, widow of Richard Huddleston, whom he married after 1483 or 1485.[1] Chronologically, if Winifred was unmarried in 1510, the second wife seems more likely to be her mother.
