Biography

Name: Lydia Throop -- AKA: Lydia Throope, Lydia Cary, Lidia Carey, et al.

Lydia (or Lidiah) was the youngest child of William Throope and his wife Mary Chapman. She was born at Bristol, Rhode Island on 15 July 1686, the earliest Throop(e) birth registered at that place in the records. [1] In her father's will of 1704, he described his "two youngest daughters to witt Mercey & Lidiah" implying that Mercy was the older of the two.

Lydia was wed to Eleazer Cary Abt. 1703 "...and removed to Windham about 1718, [Eleazer] having bought land there..." [2] she was found as a Windham Congregational Church communicant in 1726.[3]

Lydia passed away 12 Jun 1761 Wintonbury, Connecticut, at the age of 76. [4][Ref. Research Note #2] She was buried in the Windham Center Cemetery; Windham, Windham County, Connecticut.[5]

Research Notes

  1. Some online trees have Mercy and Lydia as twins, but Mercy is not recorded in the Bristol register, and therefore is unlikely to be Lydia's twin.
  2. Lydia Cary in the Connecticut, U.S., Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices, 1629-1934 places her death age as 75.[6]
