Frederick was born in 1859 at Damside, Keighley, Yorkshire.[1] His father, Emanuel's, occupation is given as "Butcher" on his birth certificate. His mother is named as Caroline Throup formerly Illingworth. In 1861 he was still living at Damside .[2] In 1871 he was living in Halifax, Yorkshire[3] but by 1881 he had moved to Salford, Lancashire[4][5][6] where he remained at various addresses for the rest of his life. His occupations as stated in the censuses include fruiterer, hawker, coster monger, labourer in shipyard and lighter man.
On 1st January 1885 he married Sarah Anne Roscoe at St Philip's Church, Salford, Lancashire.[7]Frederick and Sarah had at least six children, three of which (Maria Maud, Ernest and Arthur) died in infancy. Another son (George Frederick) died at Gallipoli in 1915.[8]
Frederick died on 4th May 1921 of broncho pneumonia.[9]
