George was born in 1891 in Pendleton, Lancashire and lived at various addresses in the Salford area[1][2]. He was the son of Frederick Throup and Sarah Roscoe. George married Ada Holden in September 1912; they had two daughters.

He served in the Great War in the Lancashire Fusiliers and on 12th November 1915 he was killed by an enemy sniper at Gallipoli. He is buried at Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery[3].
