Biography

Birth

Kate was born on 27 Mar 1890 in Wisconsin. (1910 census)

Name

Her Hocąk name was given as WaRoSheSepEWinKaw (1917 census), which appears to be for Wārúšįsēbᵋwįga, "Black Bag Woman," from wārúšį, "bag"; sēp (> sēbᵋ), "black"; -wį-, a female gender infix; -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. Perhaps more plausible is Wārúšįsēpiwįga, where sēpi (< sēp-hi > sēp, "black" and hi, a causative) means, "to cause to be black, to blacken", which gives us "She Who Blackens the Bag."

Marriages

In 1916 and again in 1918, Kate had two daughters, Walda and Verona, by an unknown White Eagle, who is never mentioned in the censuses with Kate. In the 1916 census, she is recorded as being single, despite having a child, Walda. However, in the 1919 census she is listed as a widow. She retained her surname "Thunder" and never adopted "White Eagle".

Probably in the year 1921, Kate married John Winfield Miner. Walda and Verona retained the surname "White Eagle".

Death

Kate was buried in Block 43, Lot 03 of the Spring Grove Cemetery, Wisconsin Dells, Columbia County, Wisconsin, USA. (Find a Grave)
