The Thunders are descendants of a merchant family in Dublin. Although childless, Francis Thunder of Dublin, who owned the same or similar coat of arms (see below), can be considered one of the oldest known ancestors (b. before 1595 and d. 1619).[1]
Michael Thunder of Ballaly was born abt 1712 in today's Balleally, Dublin, Leinster, Ireland. His parents were Henry Thunder of Ballally (b. 1682) and Mary Dodd (b. 1690).[2]
As far as we can tell, his only brother was Henry Thunder.
When he was 8 years old, in 1720, his father Henry Thunder of Ballally died.
On the 24th of May 1740 he married Ellinor Rourk of Lusk. He was 27 years old when he married her. He probably had eight or nine children with her (see Patrick Thunder, their son, for details)
In 1761 he leased a 100 acres (0.156 sq. miles) of land in today's Irishtowne (near Lusk, Dublin, Leinster, Ireland) for 31 years. All his life Michael seemed to have lived in Ballaly and worked as a farmer.[3][4]
In 1778 he qualified as a loyal catholic (loyal to the government) before the court of the King’s Bench.[5]
His family possessed the following coat of arms: "Argent (or silver, or white) a chevron engrailed between three trumpets firstways Description: sable (or black), a mullet of the first. Crest - A cubit arm proper grasping a trumpet sable (or black). Motto: Certavi et vici (I have fought and conquered)."[6]
He died on the 22nd of May 1780 when he was 67 years old. His wife Ellinor Rourk followed sometime in 1789.[7]
