Biography

John M Thruston was born April 17, 1812 in Pennsylvania. [1] He was son of Thomas Whiting and Mary Dorsey (Luckett) Thruston. According to references his formal name was Mountjoy Luckett Thruston, but he used the brother's name, who died in 1811.[2][3][4]

Young John or Mountjoy was in Kentucky when he immigrated to Texas. He enlisted in the regular Texas cavalry, he was awarded an officer's commission of 2nd Lieutenant December 21, 1835 in Capt. Forsyth's cavalry. [2] [5] When John Mountjoy Luckett brought thirty six (36) pounds of rifle powder to Capt. Philip Dimmitt, he was paid with a voucher. John signed that chit over to another man, named T. D. Hendrick. John Mountjoy arrived in Capt. John H Forsyth's cavalry that were assigned to travel with Lt. Col. William B Travis.[2]

Once they arrived in the Alamo in Feb., 1836, Lt. John Mountjoy was housed in the Alamo garrison. The Mexican Army arrived Feb. 23, 1836 and began the siege of the Alamo. [6]
