Anne Catherine Thynne was born on the 16th May 1851, at Kilshanny, Ennistimon, County Clare, Ireland, the sixth child, second daughter, of Edward Thynne and Bridget Stewart Fitzgerald.[1]
Quite probably due to the famine in Ireland, Anne's parents packed up the family and emigrated to the newly separated from New South Wales Colony of Queensland, arriving at Maryborough on the 29th July 1864, as assisted immigrants by way of the ship Sultana.[2]
Anne's age on the passenger list is given as 11 years, which would place her year of birth as 1853, not 1851. It is likely her age was fudged somewhat to have her be younger than she was. (Such reasons are usually financial - the costs for a 13-year-old would be different from those for an 11-year-old.)
Anne married Patrick Real, a fellow immigrant from the old country who had been in the Colony since 1850, on the 8th January 1879, in Ipswich, Queensland.[3]
Over the next five years Patrick and Anne had four children, three daughters, and a son, with two of the girls dying aged 11 months, and 4 months, respectively.
January 1902 saw the Real family returning from a 12-month world tour. Although Kathleen had not travelled the entire time with her parents and her brother, she did join the family at Naples, and travelled with them on the homeward journey. Places visited were Italy, France, Switzerland, England, Ireland (where time was spent with Anne's brother, Sir Henry Thynne), Scotland, Norway, and parts of the United States, particularly Buffalo, Niagara Falls, New York, Washington (DC), and Chicago. Also visited were the Yosemite Valley region, and San Francisco. It was from California that the Reals headed off to Honolulu, and from there to Japan where they stayed for five weeks. At Yokohama the family boarded the Kumano Maru for the trip back to Brisbane.
His Honour continued his journey on to Sydney by the steamer intending to return to Brisbane early the following month.[4]
Anne Catherine Real née Thynne passed away on the 2nd December 1930, at her home "Tabbll-Hoomg", Moray Street, New Farm, Queensland, Australia, aged 78 years.[5]
Anne was buried alongside her husband in the Toowong Cemetery, where their son would also later be laid to rest.[7]
