Biography

Elizabeth (Elisabeth) was born to Benjamin Tibbetts and Elizabeth Johnson in about 1697. The first of six children, it is believed that she was born in Kingston, Rhode Island, as were her sisters, Mary and Esther. Her sisters, Mercy, Hannah and Martha were born after the family had relocated to Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut. Her father died before her marriage to Tryall Baker. Elizabeth and Tryall Baker were married 23/24 Dec 1718 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut. [1] [2]

Elizabeth and Tryall were residents of Canterbury for many years, as early as 1718, as found in the Canterbury church records. Documented dates for their residence in Canterbury (and documentation of the events) are as follows: [3] [4]

  • 23/24 Dec 1718 for their wedding and posting of Bonds
  • 08 Oct 1721 for the baptism of their daughter, Elisabeth
  • 12 July 1724 for the baptism of Elizabeth Baker, wife of Tryall Baker
  • 06 Sep 1724 for the baptism of their daughter, Mary
  • 03 Sep 1727 for the baptism of their son, Elijah
  • July 1733 unknown reason
  • 04 Apr 1736 for the baptism of their daughter, Abigail
  • 03 Sep 1738 for the baptism of their daughter, Esther
  • 25 Sep 1746 unknown reason
  • 12 Oct 1776 when Tryall Baker died.

It is unknown when or where she died, but Elisabeth was still living as of 03 April 1777 when Benjamin Smith and Ephraim Lyons distributed "to Elisabeth Baker, Relict (widow) of Sd Dec'd the Whole of Said Personal Estate" "also distributed to Sd. Elisabeth Baker the Whole of of the Income of all the Sd. Real Este. to her During her Natural Life." Found in the Probate Papers of her husband's Will and Probate. [5]
