Het verhaal van The Tielman Brothers begon in Soerabaya, waar vier broertjes Tielman in 1946 gingen musiceren. Hun vader Herman Tielman (KNIL militair) was de grote inspirator en mentor van The Timor Rhythm Brothers, bestaande uit Reggy (gitaar, banjo), Andy (gitaar), Ponthon (contrabas) en Loulou Tielman (drums). The story of THE TIELMAN BROTHERS begin in Surabaya, where the 4 little brothers Tielman and little sister Jane started performing together in 1945 folk songs and traditional dances.
Herman Dirk Tielman was born in 1904.He was the son of Willem Adriaan Tielman and Louisa Wakkarij [1]
Father Herman a captain and later quartermaster in the KNIL (Royal Dutch Indonesian Army) and he had stayed in a Japanese concentration camp. He owned a house in Surabaya and started to play music together with his friends. Herman Tielman was a gifted all round musician and he was the one that supplied Reggy, Ponthon, Andy, Loulou and Jane with their rich musical luggage. (1)
In the mid 1700s, a native woman from Kupang married a Tielman.
An interesting note in the book: Lords of the Land, Lords of the Sea: Conflict and Adaptation in Early Colonial Timor 1600-1800 By Hans Hägerdal Pp267-68 notes a possible connection to the "Tielman family of the late colonial period, members of which held high positions in the Kupang administration."
The lady was baptised as Helena of Batavia. (see image)
