Note: by Rev. Mark Anthony Fricker.
The Tierney's moved to Ottumwa, Ia., sometime in 1878 or 1879 and he became a farmer, living on East main.
On 27 Feb 1886 they bought 80 acres more or less for 00 from George Godfrey. This place was about two miles east of Ottumwa on the Old Agency Road. They moved in shortly after. In 1888 they built a frame house (meaning it was buit from wood), the dimensions being 28'x16'x10' and they put cedar shingles on it with a block foundation under it which appears to be various sized blocks of sandstone put together with some type of mortar. These sandstones could have possibly been found on their farm and carved to size by Joseph as he worked with stone a lot Uncle Tom said. This house was built with just drop siding put on the frame or studs with plaster lath and plaster on the inside. This house ws built to replace an old one already there. Sometime in later years two more rooms were added onto the house on the north side. Here their last two children Joe and Tom were born. (This house was torn down around 1982.)
There is a very large Sycamore tree in the yard of this place that had its start from a saw buck. In the early days they would cross logs or whatever they could find and nail together to cut their wood on. One of these logs evidently was a green one and it started to grow and they let it grow and soon the tree came into existence. (This was told to Isabelle Muehe by her dad and an old neighbor.)
Sometime around the mid 1890's or so Joseph Tierney made a return trip to Ireland to visit his family. When he returned he brought back with him some young Hedge trees. He planted at least seven of these along his driveway and some behind his home in a fence line. They are still standing today (1982).
When the Tierney's first came to Ottumwa, they attended sSt. Mary's church as that was the only Catholic church Ottumwa had. Around 1881 St. Patrick's established their Catholic church. St. Mary's became the church for the city foldk and St. Patrick's became the church for the country folk. So after they moved to their new place they attended St. Patrick's church. In the late summer of 1897 the Catholic's in Ottumwa increased so much that it was decided to divide St. Mary's church and the new Church became Sacred Heart church and Ottumwa soon established boundary lines so the Tierney's started attending Sacred Heart being one of its earliest parishioners. In a booklet put out by Sacred Heart in 1972 celebrating their 75th anniversary it states "Joe Tierney was an early parishioner and lived east of town. He was also a stone mason and built culverts for the C.B.&Q. railroad." Also it has been told when Sacred Heart was being built and to help their building fund Joe Tierney donated a cow.
