Note in Stanley Linn Robe's handwriting: "Albany H.S., 1944-45. Penland, Mabel. U. of O. B.A., 1908. Typ. I, Journ. 17 years in that position. $1950"--meaning she taught Typing & Journalism at Albany H.S. 1944-45.

Mabel Penland, Teacher, Dies ALBANY Mrs, Mabel Penland, 71, who had taught in Albany high school for 25 years, died Monday night at the Sacred Heart hospital in Eugene after an extended illness. The funeral was held here at the Fortmiller-Fredericksen Funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. George H. Huber, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery. - Mrs. Penland was born at Eugene, Nov. 25 1883, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Tiffany, early Lane county settlers. She was graduated from the University of Oregon in 1908 and was married in Eugene in 1909 to John R. Penland. They came to Albany that year when Mr. Penland became first city engineer and later Linn county surveyor. He died in November, 1923. Mrs. Penland Joined the Albany high school teaching staff in the fall of 1942, instructing in typing and journalism for the succeeding 25 years, retiring in 1949. She retained residence at Albany until she entered the hospital at Eugene last June. Mrs. Penland was a member of Barzillia chapter, No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star, of which she was worthy matron in 1929; she was a charter member of Chapter O, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Albany. Surviving Mrs. Penland are three children, Mrs. Erros Osterloh, Baker; Mrs. Corinne Bauer, Portland; and Robert Penland, Heppner; a brother. A. R. Tiffany. Eugene, former University of Oregon registrar; two sisters, Mrs. H. R. Scott, Skamania, Wash., and Grace Tiffany, Portland, and six grandchildren.[1]
