Biography

Alice Tiler, was baptized Hitcham, Suffolk, 16 November 1585, daughter of John Tiler [TAG 82:211-13].[1] She died by about 1638. She married Thomas Sherwood by about 1611 as his first wife & came from Kettle Baston, Suffolk, to Massachusetts Bay with him in 1634 on the Francis of Ipswich (on 30 April 1634, "Thomas Sherwood," aged 48, "Alice his wife," aged 47, "Anna Sherwood," aged 14, "Rose Sherwood," aged 11, "Thomas Sherwood," aged 10, and "Rebecca Sherwood," aged 9, were enrolled at Ipswich as passengers for New England on the Francis of Ipswich).[2]

They had eight children:

"So we now know:"

  1. The approximate DOD of Alice's father (1608).
  2. That John Tiler possessed a copyhold in Hitcham Manor from 1580 until his death in or soon before 1608.
  3. That Alice and Thomas were already married in 1608.
  4. The names of several of Alice's sisters: Bridgett, Elizabeth, Susanna, and possibly Thomasina.
  5. The surnames of two husbands of Alice's sisters: Henry Holden and Edward Payne.

Seabrooke-2 and Tiler-12 appear to represent the same person because: Seabrooke-2 was a conflated profile, but clearly the wife of Thomas Sherwood. Please merge into Tiler-2.

Alice-210 and Tiler-12 appear to represent the same person because: Alice is intended to be the wife of Thomas Sherwood of Fairfield, CT (i.e. Sherwood-62)

Unknown-203348 and Tiler-12 appear to represent the same person because: According to Anderson's "The Great Migration", p. 308, Thomas Sherwood migrated to New England on the Frances in 1634 with his wife, Alice Tiler whom he married about 1611, along with four children (so his wife's LNAB does not appear to be unknown). Both profiles represent that they were married to a Thomas Sherwood and came to new England in 1634 on the ship Frances.

Is the last name Alice or the first name?

Seabrook-20 and Unknown-203348 appear to represent the same person because: if notes are correct name should be changed to Tiler and parents removed and then these duplicates merged.

Thank you.

Yes, her maiden name is now proven. It's Tiler, not Seabrook. Her mother's will clearly says "Thomas Sherwood of Kettlebaston, England".

Some claim that Alice, wife of Thomas Sherwood (b. 1585 in England and died 1655 in Stratford Conecticut) was Alice Seabrook, daughter of Robert Seabrook and Alice Goodspeed. However, there are problems with this. First, Alice Seabrook's parents were married September 12, 1596, and their daughter Alice, was born in 1606. Alice, wife of Thomas Sherwood, was born 23 April 1587 (according to shipping record from Ipswich on the "Francis" in 1634). The dates do not match. Others claim her maiden name was Tiler
