Generation No. 1

Johannes Tylghman (John Tilghman) was born about 1225 in Snodland Parish, Kent County, England, and died in England. It is generally agreed among historians that the name of a family is derived from the occupation of its first bearer, thus our family came from "Tileman, - the tiller, meaning one who covered roofs with tile." or as "Tillman," meaning a husbandman or farmer. The motto "Spes Alit Agricolam", is meaningful as" Hope Sustains the Farmer", so the latter interpretation is more acceptable. Changes in the spelling of the family name from Tilghman to Tillman, Tilman, Tillmon, Tilmon, etc. probably resulted from the inclination of early day clerks in Maryland and Virginia to spell a name as it sounded. [1] [2]

In Snodland the family possessed Holloway Court, as well as several courts in Faversham Parish. Philipott, in his " Villare Cantiancum", states that he had examined all of the records very carefully and had come to the conclusion that the Tilghman Family had come into possession of Holloway Court in the reign of King Edward, the 3d. This would have been between 1313 and 1377. [1] Holloway Court passed out of the ownership of the Tilghman family while owned by Edward Tilghman.[1]

John Tilghman had one son Richardus or Richard.

Generation No. 2

RICHARD TILGHMAN was born about 1260 in Snodland Parish, Kent County, England, and died in Snodland Parrish, Kent, England. Richard Tilghmann lived in Snodland Parish, Kent County, England, according to The Visitation of Kent (Volume #42) in which his name is listed as Richardus Tilghman.[1]

This history speaks of Thomas Tilghman as being a younger member of the Snodland Branch of the family which would indicate that he had brothers and sisters. The History of Kent states that the Coat of Arms of the Sussex County family is identical to that of the Snodland family's Arms. There was one identified difference, however. The Sussex Branch contained the Motto "Spes Alit Agricolam" (hope goes or flies with the farmer) on their Arms. After Thomas sold Beechworth Castle, he settled in Sussex County.
