Biography

John Tilson was born on December 31, 1742 at Plympton, son of Stephen and Janet (Murdock) Tilson. [1] [2]

Military Service

John Tilson served during the French and Indian War.

French War

  • 1761: On the list of soldiers sworn to on March 23 at Wrentham in Captain William's company, Colonel Thomas regiment, served in the westward expedition. [2]
  • 1762: April 1: French War: John Tilson, of Plympton, in Capt. William Barrow's company. Pay for service May 21 to December 7. [2]
  • 1764: February 5: Muster roll: John Tilson of Plympton, service April 6 to October 31: Captain Job William's company. 165 miles travel home, allowed. [2]
1776 Project
Corporal John Tilson served with 4th Massachusetts Bay Provincial Regiment (1775), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

American Revolution

  • 1775: April 19: John TIlson, Plympton. Private in Captain John Bridge's company, Colonel Cotton's regiment. Service 12 days. [3] [2]
  •  !775: May 3: Enlisted. Corporal in Captain John Bridgham's company, Colonel Theophilus Cotton's regiment. Service 3 months, 6 days. [3] [2]
  • 1775: November 11: Camp at Roxbury - order for bounty coat. [3] [2]
  • 1776: November: Boston Pay abstract. Private, Captain Joseph Stetson's company, Colonel Dyke's regiment. Rations to and from camp and travel allowance 80 miles home. Endorsed - Regiment at Dorchester Heights. [3] [2]

Family

John married Ruth Barrows at Plympton, Massachusetts on December 19, 1771. [1] [2] Ruth, the daughter of Peleg and Hopestill (Darling) Barrows was born about 1737, by her age at death. [4]

Ruth died on October 16, 1820, aged about 84 years and John died on November 25, 1820, aged about 80 years. [4] In their last years they resided at Carver with their son-in-law Huit MdFarlan. [2]

John is buried in the Union Cemetery in Carver: His inscription reads: In Memory of Mr John Tillson who died November 25, 1820 in the 80 year of his age.[5]

The appointed administrator of the estate of John Tilson, of Carver, submitted to the court on June 18, 1821, that John died insolvent, with his estate insufficient to pay his debts. [6]

  4. Hannah born on December 29, 1780; drowned on March 13, 1782. [2]
  5. Bethuel born on June 13, 1783; died in Ohio in March, 1823; married Pamela Bosworth of Halifax on May 21, 1809. [4] [2]
