Biography

John Tilton was born about 1703. He was the son of John Tilton of Kent County, Delaware. His mother is not known.

John Tilton appears to have married twice and had children with each of his two wives. His first wife was Anne (unknown), who died before 1744, when he remarried. This marriage produced Sarah Tilton: b. before 1744; d. 1789; m. about 1749 Jonathan Allee. Sarah died in 1789; her Will was proved 26 October. ^[1]

John Tilton married secondly in 1744 Comfort Wiltbanck, widow of Cornelius Wiltbanck. She was the daughter of John and Alice Roades. The children of this marriage were:

James - b. 1 June 1745; d. unmarried 14 May 1822 - Surgeon General of the United States Army

Nehemiah - b. 1747; d. 31 August 1814; m. Lydia Hanson

Comfort Tilton died 14 November 1787.

John Tilton died in 1748, possibly "at sea", and apparently intestate. His widow Comfort was named administrator of his estate on 29 November 1748. ^[2] A son John Tilton Jr is mentioned. Comfort TIlton remarried, as her third husband, Jacob Stout.

John Tilton's younger brother Thomas Tilton succeeded to his father's position and may have taken over the guardianship of nephews James and Nehemiah after their mother's death.
