Biography

Joseph Tilton was a son of Samuel Tilton and his wife Sarah Batchelder. He was baptized 21 August 1709 at the church of Wenham, Massachusetts. On 24 December 1727, he was admitted to the church of Ipswich, Massachusetts, which his parents had recently joined.

Joseph Tilton married twice: first on 10 April 1741 to Abigail Browne. This marriage produced seven children:

On 15 December 1746, Joseph Tilton was appointed guardian of his nephew Israel Tilton, son of Joseph's brother Samuel, who had died in 1734, leaving a young family.

Joseph Tilton married secondly 23 July 1771 the widow Phoebe Dodge. This union produced no children.

Joseph Tilton was buried 24 January 1779 in Hamilton Massachusetts. His widow remarried shortly afterward.
