Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)

John Tilton was the firstborn son of [Tilton-161|John Tilton] and his wife [Pearsall-36|Mary] of Gravesend, Long Island, New York.[1] He was born at Lynn, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 4 June 1640, perhaps only a year after his father John Tilton immigrated from England.[2]

By 1643, the Tilton family had fled the religious intolerance of Massachusetts to become founders of the town of Gravesend on Long Island, then part of New Netherlands, under the rule of the Dutch. By 1672, the Tiltons were practicing Quakers.[2]

Until the death of his father, John Tilton Senior, John Tilton at Gravesend styled himself as "Junior"; his name appears frequently in the public records as a witness to deeds and other documents.[2] When he had removed to New Jersey, he began to style himself "Senior", to distinguish himself from his own son John.

John Tilton married twice: first to Mary Coats on 10d 8m 1670 [10 Oct 1670].[3] [4]There is no issue recorded of this marriage.

He married second Rebecca Terry on 12d 3m 1674 [12 May 1674].[3] The marriage of John and Rebecca Tilton produced the following children, all born at Gravesend: [5] [2] [4]

John, b. 14 2d mo. 1675 (14 April); m. 29 July 1703 Margaret Lippencott; d. 1731
Abraham, b. 14 11th mo 1676 (14 Jan); d. before 1700
Samuel, b. 2 d 1st mo 1678 (2 March); m. 5 June 1705 Patience Allen, supposed daughter of Jedediah Allen; d. abt 1745
Sarah, b. 14th 9th mo. 1680 (14 Nov); m. 22 June 1704 Walter Herbert;
Daniel, b. 27 10 m. 1682 27 (Dec); married 12 November 1717 Elizabeth Powell; d. 13 November 1749
Thomas, 20th 10th mo 1684 (20 Dec); m.7 October 1717 Faith Lawrence; d. 4 January 1769
Mary, b. 21st 8th mo. 1686 (21 Oct); m. 1717 James Grover, Jr.;
Hester, b. 17th 2d mo 1689 (17 April); m. 15 October 1719 William Lawrence;
Peter, b. 1690; m. Lydia Bills.

John Tilton Senior had been one of the twelve original founders and patentees of Monmouth County New Jersey, [6] [7] where he acquired large tracts of land that he passed on to his children in his 1687 Will. [2] The younger John Tilton has sometimes been referred to as a Monmouth patentee, but this is misleading. John Tilton Senior did not, however, remove himself to New Jersey, residing the rest of his life at Gravesend.

It was not until several years afterwards, in 1692, that John Tilton his son moved his family to Middletown, Monmouth. During this interval, he sold his substantial property on Long Island, with the largest parcel bringing £295.[2] In Monmouth, they became regular members of the Shrewsbury Meeting, where their activities are recorded in the records.[8]

John Tilton's will was written 23 November 1700. [2] [9]

Probate of the Will was 17 Apr 1704 in Middletown, Monmouth Co, New Jersey; no more exact date of John Tilton's death has been recorded.

His wife Rebecca Tilton survived him until 18 December 1715, when she died at Shrewsbury, New Jersey.[8]

John Tilton Jun married Mary Coats at Oyster Bay on Long Island. Their marriage is under the Flushing MM marriages. Witnesses were a veritable who's who of the town of Oyster Bay: Samuel Doane [only uncertain one], Francis Weekes, Matthew Pryor, John Underhill Jun, Thomas Lyon, and Henry Townsend.

Tilton-271 and Tilton-204 appear to represent the same person because: Tilton-271 appears to have been created in error as a duplicate of his listed father, Tilton-204. They both are listed as husbands of Rebecca Terry, who was the 2nd wife of T-204 and the father of his children, here attributed to T-271, with the exception of T-275, "John Tilton IV", who was really "John Tilton III" - these numbers will be deleted.

The birthdate given for T-271, 1660, is unsourced and incorrect; the birthdate of the John Tilton, son of Tilton-204, was 1675, the birthdate given here for Tilton-275.

Tilton-271 is superfluous.

If the father Is John Senior, the son should be John Junior.

This change should be done universally, so as not to suggest there are two different persons.

Hi Heather,

I added probate information for John Tilton III. Unless you have found a death record you may want to change his death date to 'Before 17 Apr 1704' per the date his will was proved.

I hope this helps you with your research!
