Biography

Flag of Warwickshire (adopted 2016)
Samuel Tilton was born in Warwickshire, England.

Based on his recorded age at the time of his death, Samuel Tilton was born close to 1638, most likely at Wolston, Warwickshire, where his father's second marriage took place in December of that year; he was a son of William Tilton,[1] and of either William's first wife -- Ursula Pycroft, who died on 5 May 1638 -- or, as has long been thought, second wife Susannah Tilton.

An alternative birth date for Samuel of 16 May or June 1640 was offered by William Haslet Jones in 1997, though his source is unclear.[2] The date contrasts with Jones's own acceptance, a decade earlier, of the age given for Samuel by his pastor (see below) at the time of his death in 1731 -- 93, which yields a calculated death year of 1638.

Samuel married Hannah Moulton, possibly the daughter of Thomas Moulton and Martha, although this is not at all proven according to the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (GDMNH).[3] Hannah died on 11 Apr 1720.)[4][5]

Religion: Quaker

Samuel married Hannah Moulton at Hampton, in the Province of New Hampshire, in mid-October of 1662; about a decade later, the couple removed to Martha's Vineyard, where they raised their family and where Samuel ultimately passed away at Chilmark in 1731. Charles Edward Banks, quoting from a death record in the diary of Rev. William Home of Chilmark, says that Samuel died "in the 94th year of his age".[6]

Research Notes

A paraphrased excerpt from Norfolk County records, found in an issue of the Essex Antiquarian from 1900, describes Samuel as the "eldest son" of Susannah "by her first husband".[7] The original record is needed to determine whether this maternity is the writer's assumption, or arises from a direct statement of either Susannah or her second husband Roger Shaw. Still unanswered is whether Samuel, if a 1638 child of William Tilton's first wife Ursula as suggested by Samuel's recorded age at death, would have been raised -- and referred to by -- his stepmother as if he were her own, as she would have raised him from the age of several months.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

I've added a Res. Notes section citing the 1900 "Essex Antiquarian" item found by Vickie -- and have modified the section of the Bio dealing with Samuel's maternity to reflect that item's content. Access to the actual original record is wanted.

Added citation for alternative 1640 birth date

I see that ( for now), we are retaining Susannah as Samuel's mother. I have done the same in my bio of William.

[Edited x4 comment] William Haslet Jones in NEHGR 141 (1987), p. 329 -- https://www.americanancestors.org/DB202/i/11613/329/235411994 (subscription) -- shows Samuel dying at age 93 in 1731, yielding a birth year of about 1638. This conflicts with Barbara B. Marden's assertion, in 1987, in the Essex Genealogist (see Sources) of "born circa 16 Jun 1640" (no location given). Haslet Jones's "93" in the NEHGR may be taken from Banks, who says Samuel died "in the 94th year"; Banks in turn was quoting the Diary of Rev. William Homes, Samuel's pastor at Chilmark. This is specific enough to support "about 1638"... and lean even more strongly to a birth in Warwickshire, at Wolston. It argues Samuel was not a son of 2nd wife, Susannah, whom William didn't marry till 18 Dec. 1638, but rather, of 1st wife Ursula, who died on 5 May 1638.

Davis's "Ancestry of Phoebe Tilton" makes a strong case that my ancestress Mary (Tilton) Chase was an illegitimate daughter of Samuel Tilton -- with whom she came to Martha's Vineyard about 1673, treated as a family member; see https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89065996662&view=image&seq=36 . I believe the proposed merge with Tilton-1586, which shows Samuel as Mary's father, should be completed; and Mary (Tilton) Chase should be shown as an "uncertain" daughter of Samuel, with an "Unknown Unknown" profile generated for her mother.

Walter Goodwin Davis's "Ancestry of Phoebe Tilton" (https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89065996662&view=image&seq=34) notes that Samuel was the eldest son of William & Susannah, and that he "may have been born in England... between 1637 and 1640". As we do not seem to have any authoritative source for "16 Jun 1640" as either a birth or baptismal date, or Lynn as his place of birth, I would suggest going with Davis and showing "about 1640", and with Warwickshire, England, as an "uncertain" location.

If Samuel Tilton is the father of Mary Tilton Chase, William TIlton-18 can't be. Her parentage has been uncertain
