Biography

Cross of St George
Alice (Timmins) Payton was born in England.

Alice Timmins was born on 15th November 1847. Her father was Frederick Timmins and her mother's name was Elizabeth Anne Timmins. She was Christened on 23rd February 1848 in the parish of Saint Philips, Birmingham.[1]

The 1851 Census shows the family living in Calthorpe Street, Edgbaston. The records have been split into two parts. The first part only relates to her parents and sister Mary. It shows that her father was a brass founder employing over forty workers [2]. The second part records Alice with her sisters Emily and Phoebe.[3]

The 1861 census shows Alice living with her parents, three sisters (Mary, Emily and Phoebe) and three brothers (Frederick, Henry and Edward). The family are living in Hagley Road, Edgbaston. Her father's occupation is still recorded as brass founder and the family have four servants. [4]

In the 1871 census Alice is still living with her family in Hagley Road. Her sister Mary is no longer living with the family. The household now has three servants.[5]

In June 1873 Alice married George H Payton.[6]

In the 1881 Census Alice and George are living in Wheeleys Road, Edgbaston. They have four children Edith M, Alice E, Arthur H and Julian E. George's occupation is hardware merchant and they have three servants.[7]

In the 1891 census Alice is living with her husband, George, in Calthorpe Road, Edgbastion. Also living with them are three daughters (Edith, Alice and Margaret) and three sons (Julian, Hubert, and new baby, Charles). The family have four servants. [8]

By the 1901 census the family had moved to Warwick Road, Solihull. Edith, their daughter was no longer living with the family, but Arthur, their son missing from the last census, had returned. The other children (Alice Elizabeth, Julian Edward, Margeret Evelyn, Herbert Sheldon and Charles Lawrence) were still at home. This time the census shows only two servants living with the family.[9]

The 1911 census shows just Alice and George, with two servants, in their Solihull residence. [10]

Alice died in Solihull in 1928.[11]
