James married Emily Claren O'Bannon^{[2][3][4][5][6][7][11][12][13][14]} on 23 December 1903 "in the east living room of her parents' home" in Nashport, Licking Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, United States.

Prior to moving to Grand Rapids, Michigan, James operated a shoe store in Houston, Texas^[11].
