Biography

Alice was born on 15 December 1880 at Manchester, Lancashire, the daughter of George Edward Tingey and Annie Albinson. Alice and elder brother George were baptised on 13 April 1881 at St. Clement, Salford. Their parents were then living of 35 George St, Moss Side and George was working as a paste blacking manufacturer.

In the 1881 census Alice was living with her parents at 35 George St, Moss Side. She was aged just 3 months. [RG11/3939 65 Pg 63]

Her father George Edward Tingey died in 1887 when Alice was aged 6 years.

In 1891 Alice was living with her widowed mother and siblings at 46 Wellington St, Moss Side. She was aged 10 years. [RG12/3201 13 Pg 19]

In 1901 the family was still at the same address. Alice was aged 20. [RG13/3710 44 Pg 26]

Alice Tingey married Robert Ernest Flanagan in 1910 at Christchurch, West Didsbury, Manchester.

In the 1911 census Robert and Alice were living at 4 Warwick Ave, West Didsbury. Robert, aged 28, was a newspaper clerk. Alice was aged 30.

This couple had one son named Donald born 5 February 1912.

Alice was the sole executrix of her mother's estate following Annie's death on 28 January 1918. Alice's address was then recorded as 4 Warwick Avenue, Burton Road, West Didsbury. She was specifically bequeathed her mother's mahogany chest of drawers, a copper kettle and a pair of small vases.

Robert Ernest Flanagan died on 22 April 1927 aged 44 years.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Alice was living with her son and his wife at 11 South Park Road, Cheadle and Gatley, Cheshire. Her date of birth was incorrectly recorded as 15 December 1887 [instead of 1880]. Alice was then aged 58. It was also noted that Alice did voluntary night service at the local ARP [Air Raid Precautions] first aid post every third night.

Alice Flanagan died on 5 May 1952 aged 71 years.

Robert and Alice were buried together at Southern Cemetery [Section L Consecrated, Grave No. 499].
