Loyd Malcolm Tingler, 92, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017. He was born in Paint Bank, Va., a son of the late George Layman Tingler and Clara Bowers Tingler, and later moved to Salem. Malcolm joined the United States Navy in 1944 and proudly served his country during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned home and was in a group of veterans who finished their education after service, and graduated from Andrew Lewis High School. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Mary Wills Tingler; brothers, Leo, Leon, Dana and Tommy Tingler; a sister Betty Garnett, and sister-in-law, Dot Tingler. He is survived daughters, Phyllis Preston and husband Gene, Betty Powell, Janet Hirunrusme and husband Yoon, Teri Atkins and husband Ric, and Edie Saunders. Also surviving are grandchildren, Cherie Paul and husband Thomas, Kristy White, Richard White Jr., Erin Powell, William Powell Jr., Jencey Keeton and husband Cole, Daniel Hirunrusme, Tyler Atkins, Cameron Atkins and wife Meryem, Heather Saunders; great-grandchildren, Jason, Thomas, Brandon, Lauren, Alex and Sayer; sister, Jane Wertz; brother-in-law, Raymond Barnett; special friends, John Saunders, Joe and Ann Davis, Jack Clark and Don Robertson; as well as many nieces and nephews. He retired from Rowe Furniture after 34 years but was never idle. He managed the City of Salem Farmer's Market and later worked at Northwest Hardware and Import Auto. Malcolm cherished the time he spent raising funds for the youth of Salem through the Glenvar Band Boosters and the Glenvar Sports Foundation. He was instrumental in organizing the Salem Sports Foundation, and many will remember him by the countless hours he spent at the foundation's Christmas Tree Lot. He also assisted with organizing the Chance Crawford Committee and the Chance Crawford Tournament, which benefits so many people in the Roanoke Valley. Malcolm loved Salem Spartan Football, and in recent years, tuned his radio to the game every Friday night. A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Pastor Ben Lockhart will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
