Joseph was born in 1845, probably in Devonshire, England.
Joseph married Elizabeth Hunt in 1866 in Totnes, Devon, England.[1]
In the 1881 Census of Canada in Egremont township of Grey County, Ontario, Joseph and Elizabeth were living with five children and John Tinkham, farmer age 28, who was probably Joseph's brother. The name was miss-indexed as Linkham, but it is definitely the same family and has been corrected in Family Search, and submitted to the BAC.LAC.gc.ca site. [2]
He passed away in 1886 and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery Old Town, Maine.[3]
There is a cemetery document that lists his date of death, along with that of his wife Elizabeth and their son Ernest Richard Tinkham. [4]
Research on Offspring
Joseph Tinkham and Elizabeth Hunt had three children, at least, whose births were registered in Grey County, Ontario, Canada. Tinkham was not a common name in Ontario, and there was only a John Tinkham (son of Peter Tinkham and Annie Hunt) and his family in the Canadian censuses for Grey County after 1881. Based on the birth dates and places for the children, it is likely that Joseph and Elizabeth Tinkham lived in Canada after the 1871 census and left for Maine just after the 1881 census.
Emma Jane Tinkham, born 1874 in the town of Durham, Ontario, Canada in Grey County. Her father was a teamster. [5]
Anna Tinkham, born 26 April 1876 in Brant township, Bruce County -- which is next to Grey County -- Ontario, Canada. Anna is NOT in the 1881 census with the family. [6]
Robert James Tinkham, born 1880, Egremont township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. His father Joseph was a farmer in Egremont township. [7]
