Biography

"Peter Tinkham, the sonne of Ephraim Tinkham, [was] born the 25 of December," 1653 in Plymouth.[1][2] Ephraim's mother was Mary (Browne) Tinkham, a daughter of Mayflower passenger Peter Browne.[2]

He married about 1690 (based on estimated birth of first child) Mercy Mendall, daughter of John Mendall. She was born 3 August 1666 in Marshfield, and called Mercy Tinckum in her fathers 1711 will.[2][3]

A 1690 list of proprietors to the "Twenty-six men Purchase" shows Peter Tinkham holding Peter Brown's share.[2][4]

Peter died in Middleborough, 30 December 1709 age 56.[2][5] He was buried at Nemasket Hill Cemetery in Middleborough.[6]

10 Mar 1709/10, Mercy widow of Peter Tincum, late of Middleboro, was granted administration of her husband's estate. His inventory was taken on 2 March 1709/10.[7] A settlement on 22 Sep 1710 names eldest son Samuell, son Seth, eldest dtr. Marcy and youngest dau. Joanna.[8] 19 Sep 1717 Samuel Tinkham, s/o the late Peter, being over 14 and under 21 chose John Bennett jr of Middleboro as his guardian.[2]

Children b. probably in Middleboro:[2]

  1. Mercy Tinkham, b. c 1692 (based on age at death)
  2. Joanna Tinkham, b. c. 1695 (based on age at death)
  3. Samuel Tinkham, b. between 1696 and 1698; died Middleboro before 21 May 1747

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:

Are there any sources for his daughter, Mercy's birth in 1687 (in her birth year data field). It seems so early if sister Joanna wasn't born until 1696... Mayflower Births and Deaths gives her birth as about 1692 (accessed via Ancestry)

Daughter Sophie and wife Mercy Hoar (should read Mary) are from Some Descendants of Ephraim Tinkham of Middleboro, Massachusetts by Mrs. John W. Heinz. In it the author claims (without any sources) that Sophie, Mercy, Joanna and Samuel, Jr., all were the children of Mary Hoar (Hezekiah of Taunton). The author provides no birth or death date for Sophie. The author also claims that only Seth is the child of Mercy "Mendhall". That said, there are no sources, it disagrees with the Mayflower Silver Books and other quality sources; but at least we know where the information came from.

There's no way Peter had three sons named Samuel who all lived to adulthood. Do we have any idea which one is correct? The info is too different on all three of them to consider merging.

Thank you.

I've added a bio and list of children from the Mayflower silver book. So you can use that information to base the merges on.

Looks like Sophie doesnt' belong.

I am sure you are getting tired of my notes by now.  :) I have figured out the three Samuels. The oldest Samuel is actually the son of Peter's brother, Ephraim. Ephraim already has a son named Samuel, with all of the same info, so I have requested a merge. The other two Samuels are the same man, but one of them had some of his cousin's info. I have cleaned things up and requested a merge of those two profiles. I don't know what to do with Sophia and the extra wife, Mercy Hoar. It looks like there is a reference to her in the Silver Book which says there is no evidence she and Peter were ever married. So, Sophia and Mercy should probably be detached from Peter. Perhaps they are mother and daughter with a different man? Since Peter is Project Protected, it is going to take someone with that level of clearance to make some of these changes.
