DR. Tinsley, age 68, was born in Irontown, Ohio to the late Edward H. and Viola Mae (Veach) Tinsley. He was visiting his twin sister, Mary Clark, in Humble, Texas when he died.
With a genius IQ, he entered The Ohio State University at age 14. In college, he paid his way with earnings from checker exhibitions and tournaments. He received a bachelor's degree in 1950, a master's degree in 1953 and a doctorate in 1957. He taught mathematics at Florida State University 10 years and Florida A&M University 26 years.
Dr. Tinsley is considered by most experts to be the greatest checkers player ever. He won the world title from Asa Long in 1955 and defended it against English challenger, Derek Oldbury, in 1958, winning the match by a score of 9 wins, 1 loss, and 24 draws. Shortly after, he announced his retirement from competitive checkers in order to concentrate on his mathematics teaching and research post at the University of Florida.
On his father's side, Tinsley descends from Gateway Ancestor Thomas Tinsley, who came from England and settled in Virginia.
On his mother's side, Tinsley descends from James Veitch, "The Sheriff," Gateway Ancestor who came from Scotland and settled in Maryland.
Another Maryland settler, Sampson Waring was Tinsley's 7th GGF.
Tinsley and Steve Irwin's wife, Terri Raines Irwin, are 5th cousins 2x removed, descended from Edward Tinsley.
